Thanksgiving Ski Trip With Kids 2026: What's Realistically Open, East vs West

Thanksgiving week 2026 (Nov 21-29) ski planning for families: target opening dates, ski school and childcare, the Killington Cup, and East vs West picks.

Short answer: For Thanksgiving week 2026 (Sat Nov 21 to Sun Nov 29), the West has the most published opening dates. Breckenridge, Copper, Vail, Park City, Alta, Mammoth and Steamboat all target opening before or at the start of the week, Big Sky targets Nov 25, Snowbird targets Nov 27, and Deer Valley does not target opening until Dec 5. In the East, Killington never sets an opening date, and Stowe, Okemo and Mount Snow had not announced 2026-27 dates when I checked. The big catch for families is lessons: Killington says its group kids' programs start in December and its beginner terrain likely won't open until December either. If you have a first-timer, the West is the safer Thanksgiving bet. If your kids already ski intermediate terrain and you want a drive, Killington during the Killington Cup is a fun weekend, as long as you plan around the race-day changes.

Checked Oct 20, 2026 (America/New_York). Every opening date on this page is a published target, snow dependent, and can move. Sources are listed at the bottom.

I'm a dad based in PA, and Park City and the Wasatch are this site's home-mountain focus. Thanksgiving is the first long school break of the winter, so every fall the same question comes up: "Can we actually ski that week with the kids, and where?" Here's what the resorts have published, what they haven't, and how I'd pick.

What's open Thanksgiving week: the West

Deer ValleyDec 5, 2026Target, snow dependentNot targeting Thanksgiving week

Ski Utah's opening-date list (Oct 1, 2026) matches the Utah resort dates above and also lists Solitude Nov 20 and Snowbasin Nov 27. Brighton was "to be announced."

Park City note. Park City Mountain's hours page lists winter lift operations from Nov 20, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It also lists Ski and Snowboard School hours as "TBD." The base rental shops at Canyons Village and Mountain Village list an 11/20 opening, and Summit House at the top of Bonanza lists 11/27. Deer Valley, the other half of a Park City trip, is not targeting opening until Dec 5.

What's open Thanksgiving week: the East

ResortPublished openingLabelWhat it means for Nov 21-29
KillingtonNo set date. Killington says it opens "as soon as possible"Target, snow dependentSnowmaking started Oct 17. Peak days are Nov 26-29
StoweNot announced as of Oct 20n/aVail Resorts said more opening dates would come "in the coming months"
OkemoNot announced as of Oct 20n/aSame as Stowe
Mount SnowNot announced as of Oct 20n/aSame as Stowe

Killington's early-season reality. Killington's hours page says that when it first opens, terrain is North Ridge via the K-1 Gondola and the Peak Walkway, walking may be required until top-to-bottom skiing is established, and the first day is typically for season pass holders only. Once top-to-bottom skiing is running, regular hours start, with 8 a.m. openings on peak days, and Nov 26-29, 2026 is a peak period.

Stowe, Okemo and Mount Snow. Vail Resorts' Aug 18 release named opening dates for Colorado, Utah, California, Washington and BC resorts, not the Vermont ones. I'm not printing third-party "projected" dates here. If one of these is your plan, keep lodging refundable until Vail Resorts posts an actual target.

Ski school and childcare that week

This is where Thanksgiving trips win or lose for families with little kids. Here's what each resort's own page says, as of Oct 20.

Park City Mountain (UT). Little Adventures Children's Center at Canyons Village lists a winter session of Nov 20 to April 11, open 7 days a week including holidays, for kids 6 weeks to 6 years. Published full-day rates are $238 (6 weeks to 23 months) and $233 (2 to 6 years). Reservations are required during premium periods. Ski and Snowboard School hours are listed as "TBD," so confirm lesson availability for your dates before you book flights.

Breckenridge (CO). Peak 8 Child Care lists Nov 21 to April 4, 7 days a week, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for ages 6 months to 4 years. The second center, Beaver Run, doesn't open until Dec 19. Breck says it books up fast and recommends reservations.

Keystone (CO). The Children's Center (6 months to 5 years, River Run) says it is welcoming families for winter 26/27 and operates "5 days a week with some select holidays." It does not publish a start date, so call before you count on it for Thanksgiving week.

Killington (VT). Ministars (ages 4-6) runs "daily, starting in December." Youth Learn to Ski/Ride (ages 7-15) runs "daily, December - April." The one kids' option Killington lists for late November is 1-hour private lessons for ages 3-4, offered Friday to Sunday from late November and including the Nov 26-29 peak dates. Bottom line: if your child needs a group lesson, Killington Thanksgiving is a tough fit.

Okemo (VT). Childcare (18 months to 4 years) is listed as open daily, full day only. Okemo says pre-season reservations from Oct 19 until opening are available by calling the center.

Mount Snow (VT). Childcare (18 months to 4 years) is listed as Friday to Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., plus holiday windows of Dec 26-31 and Feb 15-18. Thanksgiving is not on that holiday list, so plan on Friday to Sunday only, and only once the resort is open.

Steamboat, Vail, Copper, Alta, Snowbird, Big Sky, Stowe, Mammoth. I didn't find Thanksgiving week ski school or childcare dates published on the pages I checked. Call the resort before booking if a lesson or childcare is make-or-break. Our ski resorts with childcare guide covers what each program offers in a normal season.

Kids' terrain in early season: the honest version

  • Opening day isn't the whole mountain. Killington is the clearest example: it says beginner terrain "likely will not be available until sometime in December," and during the Killington Cup weekend (Nov 28-29) it will run intermediate and advanced terrain only.
  • Walking is part of early season at Killington. Until top-to-bottom skiing is established, you may walk the Peak Walkway. That's fine for a strong 12-year-old and a lot to ask of a 6-year-old in ski boots.
  • Opening-day lift lists are short. Alta's opening-day page lists two lifts for Nov 20, Sunnyside and Collins. Ask any resort which learning areas will be running before you book a beginner lesson. (Alta also does not allow snowboarding.)
  • Deer Valley is after the holiday. Its Dec 5 target is after Thanksgiving week, so it's out of the picture unless it opens early.
  • Check the terrain report the week before. A resort can be "open" with a handful of runs. For a beginner, the question isn't whether the resort is open but whether a learning area and a lesson are.

Crowds and prices (sourced notes only)

  • Steamboat kids ski free, Nov 21 to Dec 15, 2026. Kids 12 and under get $0 lift tickets with no adult purchase required. Pick the "12 and Under Kids Ski Free Nov. 21 - Dec. 15, 2026" option, and add one ticket per day (the free tickets are single-day tickets, not a multi-day product). That covers all of Thanksgiving week. More windows like this are in our kids ski free guide.
  • Ski Utah Passport blackouts. If you have a 4th, 5th or 6th grader with a Ski Utah Passport, Nov 27-28, 2026 are blackout dates at Alta, Park City Mountain, Snowbird and Deer Valley, among others. Solitude and Snowbasin list no blackout dates.
  • Killington peak days. Killington lists Nov 26-29, 2026 as peak dates, and expects the Killington Cup to draw 40,000 fans over the weekend. Saturday preferred parking was already sold out when I checked.
  • Copper race weekend. The Stifel Copper Cup, men's World Cup racing, is at Copper Nov 28-29.
  • Park City childcare. Reservations are required during premium periods, and the cancellation window is 48 hours.

I'm not quoting lodging prices, airfare or "least crowded day" claims, because no resort published them for this week.

The Killington Cup, Nov 27-29, 2026

The Stifel Killington Cup is the Audi FIS Ski World Cup's women's slalom and giant slalom stop on Killington's Superstar trail, over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov 27-29, 2026. Killington's release says it's the first World Cup race on U.S. soil this season and expects Olympic gold medalists Mikaela Shiffrin and Federica Brignone, plus Paula Moltzan, in the field.

Schedule (from killington.com):

  • Fri Nov 27: Festival Village opens 3 p.m. at K-1 Base, athlete bib presentation 5:45 p.m., then live music and fireworks.
  • Sat Nov 28: Giant slalom, run 1 at 9:30 a.m. and run 2 at 12:30 p.m., on Superstar.
  • Sun Nov 29: Slalom, run 1 at 10:30 a.m. and run 2 at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets: General admission is $10 per day Saturday and Sunday. Grandstand tickets are $50 Saturday and $45 Sunday, and Premier Grandstand tickets are $110 Saturday and $100 Sunday. Concerts are included with general admission or premier seating.

What changes for skiing families on Nov 28-29 (Killington's own list):

  • Killington stays open, but only intermediate and advanced terrain is open.
  • K-1 Lodge is inside the venue. A lift ticket, Ikon Pass or Killington season pass does not get you in; you need a Killington Cup general admission ticket.
  • Rentals are at Snowshed Lodge only. The K-1 rental shop is closed Nov 28-29.
  • There's no food service outside the venue at K-1; Peak Lodge has food and restrooms.
  • All K-1 parking is reserved for preferred parking. Free remote lots have shuttles, and Killington suggests Skyeship or Pico along Route 4. Gear up at your car.
  • No overnight parking in any resort lot, including Skyeship, on the nights of Nov 27 and 28.
  • Killington says these impacts don't apply Thursday Nov 26 or Friday Nov 27.

My take: with kids who ski blues comfortably, Thursday and Friday skiing plus a Saturday at the race is a memorable East Coast Thanksgiving. With a beginner, the race weekend stacks every early-season limit at once: no group lessons until December, no beginner terrain likely, and race-day logistics on top of that. If you're watching from home, NBC and Peacock carry the races.

How to pick: East vs West for Thanksgiving

Either way: book refundable lodging, check each resort's terrain report the week before, and make your lesson and childcare reservations as soon as dates open. This year has a strong El Niño in play. Our El Niño winter 2026-27 guide explains what NOAA's outlook does and doesn't say for the West vs the Northeast.

Lean West if:

  • Your kids are beginners or need a group lesson. The clearest published Thanksgiving week kids' programs are in the West (Park City and Breck's Peak 8 childcare), while Killington's group lessons start in December. Even there, confirm lesson availability for your exact dates.
  • You want the most published opening dates before Nov 21. Breck, Copper, Vail and Mammoth all target opening in early to mid November.
  • You want free kids' tickets. Steamboat's $0 kids window covers the whole week.
  • Park City from Salt Lake City is still our home-base pick. Park City Mountain and Alta target Nov 20, Snowbird Nov 27. Just remember Deer Valley's Dec 5 target, and pass blackouts on Nov 27-28.

Lean East if:

  • You want to drive from PA, and your kids already ski intermediate terrain.
  • You want the Killington Cup experience, and you're fine with Thursday and Friday as your main ski days.
  • You can stay flexible. With no published dates at Stowe, Okemo or Mount Snow yet, the East rewards families who can book refundable lodging and decide close to the week.

Family packing tip for a November trip

November mornings can be cold and windy, with lodges partly open and some walking in ski boots, so pack layers you can add and take off, plus a dry change of clothes and spare gloves for each kid. Use our family ski packing list to make sure nothing gets left behind. If you're flying West with a family's worth of skis and boots, compare options in our ski shipping companies compared guide before you pay airline bag fees.
