Short answer: If you're flying in from the East Coast before about Nov 20, Colorado is the only real option, and it will be thin. Breckenridge and Copper target Nov 6, Vail targets Nov 13, and Keystone says "as soon as possible" with no opening day announced. Utah's big resorts start Nov 20 (Park City, Alta, Solitude) and later. For a first-timer or a young kid, I'd wait until Thanksgiving week or the first week of December, when more terrain is open and the free-kids windows kick in.
Verified Oct 2026. Every opening date below is a resort target, conditions permitting, and can move.
I'm a dad based in PA, and Park City and the Wasatch are this site's home-mountain focus. Every October the same question shows up in my inbox from other East Coast parents: "Can we ski in November with the kids?" Yes, you can. Whether you should depends on how much you value early-season prices and crowds versus a full mountain. Here's what the resorts have actually announced.
What's open early: Colorado
| Resort | Target opening | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Keystone | As soon as possible in October | No opening day announced |
| Breckenridge | Nov 6, 2026 | Announced by Vail Resorts |
| Copper Mountain | Nov 6, 2026 | Announced by Copper |
| Vail Mountain | Nov 13, 2026 | Announced by Vail Resorts |
| Purgatory | Nov 20, 2026 | Listed by Colorado Ski Country USA |
| Steamboat | Nov 21, 2026 | Listed by Colorado Ski Country USA |
| Beaver Creek | Nov 25, 2026 | Announced by Vail Resorts |
A note on Keystone. You may have seen that Keystone is selling lift tickets for Saturday, Oct 24. That is a ticket date, not an opening day. A Keystone spokesperson told reporters the resort does not have an official opening date, and that anyone who buys an October ticket can move it to an earlier opening day or get a refund. I would not book flights around Oct 24.
Arapahoe Basin and Loveland also usually open early. Neither has an official opening date that I could confirm on a resort or Vail Resorts page, so I'm leaving them out of the table. Opening dates for Keystone, A-Basin and Loveland are often announced about a day before the lifts spin, which is a bad fit for a family flying from PA.
What's open early: Utah
| Resort | Target opening |
|---|---|
| Brian Head | Nov 6, 2026 |
| Park City Mountain | Nov 20, 2026 |
| Alta | Nov 20, 2026 |
| Solitude | Nov 20, 2026 |
| Snowbird | Nov 27, 2026 |
| Snowbasin | Nov 27, 2026 |
| Deer Valley | Dec 5, 2026 |
| Powder Mountain | Dec 11, 2026 |
| Brighton | Not announced yet |
Brian Head is the only Utah resort open before Nov 20, and it sits in southern Utah, well away from the Salt Lake City resorts this guide compares. For the full Utah rundown, see What's New at Utah Ski Resorts for Families.
Kid-friendly terrain in early season
Early season means a limited number of runs, mostly made with snowmaking, and everyone shares them. Here's what the resorts say about beginner terrain:
- Breckenridge: The resort's own terrain guide points beginners to the Rip's Ride learning area and the Five SuperChair on Peak 8, and to the Quicksilver SuperChair on Peak 9. Which of those lifts will run on Nov 6 has not been announced.
- Keystone, Copper and Vail: I couldn't confirm which beginner lifts or runs will be open at opening. Not announced.
- Snowbird (Utah): The new Chickadee learning lift has a slow-loading conveyor and a regraded learning area, and Snowbird added 11 automated snow guns for early season. It targets Nov 27.
- Park City (Utah): The beginner areas are High Meadow Park and the Red Pine learning zone at Canyons, plus First Time Park at Mountain Village. Which will be open on Nov 20 has not been announced.
- Deer Valley (Utah): Dec 5 target, with a new family snow-feature zone tentatively planned on a green run. See the Utah guide above.
My honest take: in the first week or two, a kid who already links turns will be fine on a handful of groomed runs. A first-timer is better off waiting for more beginner terrain, a full ski school schedule and fewer people on the same few trails.
Kids-ski-free windows
These are the early-season windows from our Kids Ski Free guide, all checked against each resort's own page. Kids must be 12 and under.
| Resort | Window | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Steamboat (CO) | Nov 21 to Dec 15, 2026 | $0 lift ticket from opening day, no other purchase needed. Add one per day at checkout. |
| Deer Valley (UT) | Dec 5 to 11, 2026 | Complimentary daily lift ticket. Kids still need a ticket in hand, so get the free one online first. |
| Mammoth (CA) | Dec 5 to 11, 2026 | $0 child ticket reserved online for each day. Not on a Denver or Salt Lake route, but good to know. |
Two lodging-string deals also matter on the Colorado side. At Keystone, booking two or more nights directly with the resort gets each kid 12 and under one free ski day, plus one more per extra night. Steamboat's rest-of-season program needs a 5+ day adult ticket bought before the season starts. Details and fine print are in the Kids Ski Free guide.
No Breckenridge, Copper or Vail early-season kids-free window was confirmed, so I'm not listing one.
Flight and travel logic from PHL, NYC and BOS
I'm not quoting fares or flight times. Those change daily, and I won't print numbers I can't source. What the resorts and visitor bureaus do say about the ground part:
- Salt Lake City to Park City: Visit Park City lists it at about a 35-minute drive from the airport, and Park City is also reachable by licensed rideshare, taxi, private shuttle or Park City Rides from the airport. Deer Valley, Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton are on the same side of the valley. See why Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City destination page.
- Denver to Breckenridge: About 104 miles via I-70 west and CO-9 south. In clear conditions, plan about 2 hours. In winter weather or on busy weekends, allow 2.5 to 3 hours or more. See Summit County, CO.
- Denver to Steamboat: I did not source a drive time for this one, so check it before you book. See Steamboat Springs.
For a tired 4-year-old after a day of travel, the transfer matters as much as the flight. A 35-minute ride is a very different thing from a 2-to-3-hour mountain drive in early-season weather. For the bigger fly-or-drive question, see flying vs driving.
A decision rule
1. Leaving before Nov 20, kids can already ski: Colorado. Look at Breckenridge or Copper (Nov 6). Keep your tickets and lodging flexible, and budget for a short list of open runs.
2. First-timer or under 6: Wait. Thanksgiving week or the first week of December gives you more open terrain and a full ski school.
3. Thanksgiving week, want the shortest transfer: Utah. Park City, Alta and Solitude target Nov 20, and Snowbird and Snowbasin Nov 27.
4. Want free lift tickets for the kids, and fine with limited terrain: Steamboat, Nov 21 to Dec 15. Or Deer Valley, Dec 5 to 11.
5. Can't decide: Pick the dates first, then the airport. Check each resort's page 48 hours before you fly, and avoid paying for non-refundable lodging until the opening date is firm.
Your pass matters too: Park City, Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail are Epic, and Steamboat and Copper are on the Ikon list. See Epic vs Ikon for families.
The honest caveat: early season is thin
Early season is the cheapest and quietest time to ski, and the most uncertain. Opening dates are targets. Terrain expands slowly, and a storm can open a lot in a week, while a warm spell can stall everything. Kids can have a great time on a few groomed runs, but "open" at a resort in the first weeks usually does not mean "the whole mountain." If your family needs variety, ski school, or lots of green runs, the first half of December is a safer bet than early November. Plan on a short day and have a plan B for the afternoon.

FAQ
What's the earliest I can ski with kids in Colorado in 2026-27?
Keystone says "as soon as possible" in October but has no opening day announced. The earliest announced dates are Nov 6 at Breckenridge and Copper Mountain.
Is Keystone really opening Oct 24?
Not announced. Oct 24 is the first date Keystone is selling lift tickets for. Keystone says that has no bearing on its opening date, and October tickets can be moved to an earlier opening day or refunded.
When do Utah ski resorts open?
Brian Head targets Nov 6. Park City, Alta and Solitude target Nov 20, Snowbird and Snowbasin Nov 27, Deer Valley Dec 5 and Powder Mountain Dec 11. Brighton hasn't announced a date.
Do kids ski free in early season?
At a few places, for set windows. Steamboat has $0 tickets for kids 12 and under from Nov 21 to Dec 15, and Deer Valley and Mammoth have free kids weeks Dec 5 to 11. Check each resort's page for the rules before you book.
Is early season good for a first-time skier?
It can be, at a resort with a good learning area, but terrain is limited and crowded in the first couple of weeks. I'd wait until Thanksgiving week or December for a first-timer under 6.
Which is easier with kids from the East Coast, Denver or Salt Lake City?
Salt Lake City, mostly for the transfer. Park City is about 35 minutes from the airport. Breckenridge is about 104 miles from Denver, roughly 2 hours in clear conditions and longer in winter traffic.
Should I book non-refundable lodging for early November?
I wouldn't. Opening dates are targets and can slip. Look for flexible or refundable bookings until the resort confirms its opening day.
Do you have Colorado fares or flight times from PHL, NYC or BOS?
No. Fares change too often, and I only list things I can source. Check your airline and compare dates before you commit.
