Choose Alta if
Families with skiing kids 8+ who already like steep snow and can live without a village.
- Kids 8+ who already ski and like snow more than a village.
- A ski-only family — no snowboarders. It's policy.
- Someone who can live at Albion for two days without summit FOMO.
Choose Snowbird if
Families with kids 8+ who want Cottonwood snow, a tram, and a lodge pool for the afternoon crash.
- Kids 8+ who want Cottonwood snow and a tram memory.
- You can lodge on the hill so the canyon is a once-a-week problem.
- A mixed family that will keep little kids in Chickadee without apology.
The tradeoff
Alta is ski-only, no daycare, 15% beginner, Family Score 4.9, and proud of it. Snowbird attached a tram, a pool, 27% beginner terrain, and limited camp-style care for about ages 2–4 — Family Score 6.2 — and is still mostly not for beginners. Alta’s base is 8,530 feet; Snowbird’s published base is 7,760, and Little Cottonwood skiing is still the altitude problem. The fork is whether you want the snow Alta refused to dilute, or the slightly more usable Cottonwood day.
